What is AI Overviews optimisation?
A Google AI Overview is the AI-written summary that appears above the normal results for some searches, with links to the pages it drew on. AI Overviews optimisation is the work of making your pages among those linked sources.
AI Overviews appear above the normal results for a growing share of informational searches. The pages they cite are usually already ranking well, but ranking alone is not enough: Google picks passages that answer the specific question plainly. That makes this work a mix of solid SEO and careful editing at the level of individual paragraphs.
AI Overviews optimisation at a glanceGoogle AI Overviews optimisation is the work of making a page eligible and useful enough for Google to cite in its AI-generated summaries. Google states that no special markup is required: a page needs to be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and helpful for the query. Our work focuses on which queries trigger an overview, what the cited pages have in common, and closing that gap on your pages.
In practice
Google says there is no special tag or submission. A page has to be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and helpful for the question. So the work is finding which of your searches show an overview, studying the pages Google cites, and closing the gap on yours.
Who it is for
Businesses that depend on Google for informational and comparison searches: publishers, service firms, software companies and online stores.
What it is not
It is not a paid placement and there is no schema that forces inclusion. Google chooses the sources.
What changes for the buyer
Follow one question from start to finish. The numbers match the markers on the conversation.
- Step 1
The buyer asks a full question
Not a couple of keywords. A sentence that describes what they need, often with a place, a budget or a size.
- Step 2
Google AI Overviews writes one answer
It names a few businesses and gives a reason for each. There is no second page to scroll to.
- Step 3
It shows where it looked
The sources beside the answer are the places your business needs to be present and described well.
Works to rank a page in the list of results.
Works to have a passage from that page used and linked in the summary above the list.
How Google builds an AI Overview
An AI Overview is assembled from Google's normal search index. Google has described the process in broad terms, and it runs in four steps.
- 1
Google decides whether to show one
Overviews appear mostly on informational and comparison searches. Many searches still show none.
- 2
It runs related searches
Google has said its AI features can issue several related searches on the subtopics of a question, a technique it calls query fan-out.
- 3
It selects supporting pages
Pages come from the index and must be eligible to show a snippet. Pages that answer the specific point clearly are preferred.
- 4
It writes a summary with links
A Gemini model composes the summary and links to the pages that support it. Those links are the positions worth holding.
Crawlers and access rules for Google AI Overviews
Access comes first. If Google AI Overviews cannot reach or read a page, nothing else on this page matters. These are the controls involved.
- Allow
GooglebotCrawls pages for Google Search. A page must be indexed to be cited in an AI Overview.
- Setting
nosnippet / max-snippetRobots meta rules that limit snippets. They also stop or limit use of the page in AI Overviews.
- Setting
data-nosnippetAn HTML attribute that keeps a specific passage out of snippets and overviews.
# AI Overviews use normal Google Search indexingUser-agent: GooglebotAllow: / # In the page <head>: allow full snippets<meta name="robots" content="index, follow, max-snippet:-1"> # Avoid on pages you want cited<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">
Google states that no special markup or file is required for AI Overviews. A page needs to be indexed, eligible to show a snippet and helpful for the query.
The answer now sits above the first result
When an overview appears, it takes the top of the page. Being one of its linked sources is the new first position for that search.
- 1
Ranking well is not the same as being cited
The sources in an overview are often not the top organic results. Google picks pages that answer the specific point clearly, so a strong ranking alone does not secure the link.
- 2
Some pages are not eligible at all
A page that is not indexed, or that forbids snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet:0, cannot be used in an overview. These settings are sometimes left on by mistake.
- 3
Overviews follow the question, not the keyword
They appear most on informational and comparison searches. Pages written around a keyword but not around the question behind it tend to be passed over.

How-to and comparison searches trigger overviews that shape the shortlist before a click.
Education
Course, qualification and career questions are answered at the top of the results page.
Travel and hospitality
Planning questions show summaries, and the pages cited collect the bookings that follow.
Local businesses
Local advice searches increasingly show an overview above the map pack.

Our AI Overviews optimisation process
Five stages. Mapping, eligibility and gap analysis are done in the first month. Rewrites and tracking then run month by month.
- 1
Query map
We list the searches that matter to you, from Search Console and from your own priorities. Each one is checked to see whether Google shows an AI Overview and which pages it links to.
You receiveA query map showing which searches trigger an overview and who is cited today.
- 2
Eligibility check
Indexing, snippet permissions such as nosnippet and max-snippet, canonical tags and rendering are checked on every page that should be competing. Problems are fixed directly, or passed to your developer with instructions.
You receiveAn eligibility report with each fix marked done or waiting.
- 3
Gap analysis against the cited pages
For each priority query we compare your page with the pages Google cites: what question they answer, how early they answer it, and what evidence they give.
You receiveA page-by-page brief stating what has to change.
- 4
Rework the pages
Each page gets a direct answer near the top, question-led headings and short, self-contained paragraphs. Named authors, dates and sources are added, with structured data that matches the visible content. You approve every page before it goes live.
You receiveRewritten pages, published, with validated structured data.
- 5
Re-check and refine
The queries are checked again. We report where your pages appear as a source and adjust the ones that are not yet cited. Visibility and clicks are reported separately, because one can rise without the other.
You receiveA monthly source report and the list of pages to work on next.
Hover or tap a stage for the detail. Timings are typical for a single website; your proposal sets out the exact schedule.

What we will not promise
- Google decides when an overview appears and which pages it links to. No agency controls that, and it changes often.
- Google Search Console counts AI Overview clicks within normal search totals and does not report them separately, so tracking relies on checking the queries directly.
- Being cited can raise visibility without raising clicks, because some searchers get their answer from the summary. We report both.
What you can count on
- A dated baseline before work starts, so progress is measured and not guessed.
- The agreed scope of work, delivered every month.
- A plain answer at each review if something is not working, with what we will change.
We tell you this before you start, not after.
How AI Overviews optimisation helps your business grow
Being a linked source matters because of what it does for your visibility and enquiries. This is what the work is aimed at.

Mistakes we see most often
These come up in almost every first audit. Each one is avoidable, and most are quick to put right once you know to look.
Check my site for these- Mistake 01
Looking for special markup
Google says no special schema or file is needed for AI Overviews. Time spent on “AI tags” is wasted.
1 - Mistake 02
Blocking snippets
A nosnippet rule or a very low max-snippet setting makes a page ineligible to be cited.
2 - Mistake 03
Burying the answer
If the direct answer is in paragraph six, a clearer competitor page is cited instead.
3 - Mistake 04
Judging by rankings alone
A page can hold position three and lose most of its clicks to the overview above it. Track citations as well.

Google AI Overviews Optimisation: common questions
Straight answers to the 10 questions we are asked most.
Send it to us and you get a reply within one business day.
Ask your own question01What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They answer the query in a few sentences and link to the web pages the summary draws on.
02How do I get my site into AI Overviews?
There is no special tag or submission. Google says a page must be indexed, eligible to show a snippet and helpful for the query. In practice, pages that answer the specific question clearly, show real expertise and are technically sound are the ones that get linked.
03Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google states that no special structured data is required. Schema still helps Google understand the page, and it should always match what is visible on it.
04Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Yes, by limiting snippets with the nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet controls. These also affect your normal search snippets, so the decision should be made page by page.
05Will AI Overviews reduce my traffic?
They can reduce clicks on simple informational searches, because some people get the answer from the summary. Being a cited source keeps your brand in front of those searchers, and searches with buying intent are affected less.
06How is this different from featured snippet work?
The writing principles are similar: a clear, direct answer near the top. The difference is that an overview combines several sources and covers follow-up points, so depth, evidence and coverage of related questions matter more.
07How do you know which searches show an AI Overview?
We check your target queries directly and with tracking tools, by country and device, and record which ones trigger an overview and which pages are cited. That list is refreshed each month.
08Do AI Overviews appear in every country?
They are available in many countries and languages, and Google continues to expand them. We confirm what appears in each market you target before planning the work.
09Can a small site be cited in AI Overviews?
Yes. Google cites the passage that answers the question well, and smaller specialist sites are regularly cited alongside large ones.
10How do I measure traffic from AI Overviews?
Google includes AI Overview clicks and impressions within Search Console’s performance data but does not separate them. We track citations directly and compare them with click trends for the same queries.
No question matches that. Try another word, or ask us directly.
