Overview

What is Gemini and AI Mode SEO?

Gemini is Google's AI model and assistant. AI Mode is the conversational version of Google Search built on it, where people ask a question and then ask follow-ups, and Google answers with links to supporting pages.

AI Mode changes how a single search behaves. Instead of one query and one results page, Google runs several related searches in the background and assembles an answer the user can keep questioning. A page that only answers the first question is used once. A site that also covers the natural follow-ups is used again and again through the conversation.

Gemini and AI Mode SEO at a glance

Gemini SEO and Google AI Mode optimisation prepare a site for Google's conversational search. Google has said AI Mode breaks a question into several related searches and combines the results, so pages that cover a topic and its follow-up questions thoroughly have more chances to be used. The foundations are the same as for Google Search: indexed, snippet-eligible, helpful pages.

  • In practice

Gemini and AI Mode SEO prepares your site to be one of those pages. Google has said AI Mode splits a question into several related searches, so pages that cover a topic and its follow-up questions thoroughly have more chances to be used.

  • Who it is for

Businesses with considered purchases, where buyers ask several questions before deciding.

  • What it is not

It is not a separate index to submit to. The pages come from normal Google Search, so the basics still decide eligibility.

Example

What changes for the buyer

Follow one question from start to finish. The numbers match the markers on the conversation.

  1. Step 1

The buyer asks a full question

Not a couple of keywords. A sentence that describes what they need, often with a place, a budget or a size.

  2. Step 2

Gemini and AI Mode writes one answer

It names a few businesses and gives a reason for each. There is no second page to scroll to.

  3. Step 3

    It shows where it looked

The sources beside the answer are the places your business needs to be present and described well.

How it works

How Google AI Mode answers a question

Google has described AI Mode as a search that does the follow-up searching for you. It works in four steps.

  1. 1

    The question is split up

Google breaks it into subtopics, a technique it calls query fan-out.

  2. 2

    Many searches run at once

Each subtopic is searched separately across Google's index.

  3. 3

    The results are combined

A Gemini model reads what came back and writes one answer, with links to supporting pages.

  4. 4

    The conversation continues

Follow-up questions keep the earlier context and set off new searches.

Crawler access

Crawlers and access rules for Gemini and AI Mode

Access comes first. If Gemini and AI Mode cannot reach or read a page, nothing else on this page matters. These are the controls involved.

  • Googlebot

Crawls pages for Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode.

    Allow
  • Google-Extended

A robots.txt token, not a crawler. It controls whether content is used for Gemini training and grounding in some products. It does not affect Google Search.

    Your choice
robots.txtExample
# Google Search, AI Overviews and AI ModeUser-agent: GooglebotAllow: / # Optional: opt out of Gemini training and grounding# (does not change Google Search rankings)User-agent: Google-ExtendedDisallow: /

Most businesses should leave Google-Extended allowed. Blocking it is a content-policy decision, not an SEO tactic.

Why it matters

One question now becomes many searches

A page that answers only the headline question misses the follow-ups Google also looks up.

  1. 1

    Coverage beats a single keyword

Because the question is expanded into related searches, pages that answer the surrounding questions are found more often.

  2. 2

    Follow-ups reward depth

When the person asks a second and third question, the sources that already covered those points stay in the conversation.

  3. 3

    Search fundamentals still decide eligibility

A page that is not indexed or forbids snippets cannot be used, whatever its quality.

Common mistakes

Mistakes we see most often

These come up in almost every first audit. Each one is avoidable, and most are quick to put right once you know to look.

Check my site for these
  1. Mistake 01

Treating Gemini as a separate search engine

It draws on Google’s index. If Google Search cannot index and show your page, Gemini will not use it.

  2. Mistake 02

    Misunderstanding Google-Extended

Blocking Google-Extended affects model training and grounding in some Gemini products. It does not remove a page from Google Search features.

  3. Mistake 03

Splitting one topic across many thin pages

Thorough pages that handle follow-up questions have more chances to be used than a scatter of short ones.

  4. Mistake 04

    Ignoring entities and structured data

Google connects answers to things it recognises. Unclear business and product information makes you harder to use.

FAQ

Gemini & Google AI Mode SEO: common questions

Straight answers to the 9 questions we are asked most.

Is yours not here?

Send it to us and you get a reply within one business day.

Ask your own question
01What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a conversational version of Google Search. It answers a question in full, with links to supporting pages, and lets the person ask follow-up questions.

02Is Gemini SEO different from normal Google SEO?

The foundations are the same. Google says pages need to be indexed, snippet-eligible and helpful. The difference is emphasis: covering a topic and its follow-up questions thoroughly matters more in a conversation than ranking for one keyword.

03Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Mode?

No. Google states that Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini model training and grounding, and does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Search features are controlled through Googlebot and snippet settings.

04How is this different from AI Overviews?

An AI Overview is a summary on a normal results page. AI Mode is a full conversational experience with follow-ups. The preparation overlaps, and we plan the two together.

05Can you track AI Mode visibility?

Google does not report it separately, so we test your priority questions directly each month and record whether your pages are linked.

06Do I need separate work for the Gemini app and Google AI Mode?

No. Both rest on Google’s index and the same quality signals. We plan them together with your Google SEO and report on each surface separately.

07Will this also help my normal Google rankings?

Yes. Deeper topic coverage, clearer structure and stronger entity information are the same things Google Search rewards.

08Is AI Mode available everywhere?

Google has been rolling AI Mode out country by country and language by language. We confirm availability in your target markets before planning.

09Should I block Google-Extended?

Only if you have a specific reason to keep content out of Gemini training and grounding. It does not affect your ranking in Google Search, and we talk through the trade-off with you.
