HVAC & plumbing SEO case study: 4K to 16.4K monthly organic visits in Fresno & Sacramento
When comfort can’t wait: how a multi-location Fresno and Sacramento home services company became findable at the exact moment homeowners need it — the local SEO strategy, the keyword rankings and organic traffic growth, with the baseline and limits stated.
Overview
Found at the moment it matters
The company already had the service capability. The website needed to match it — ranking for the urgent, local, high-value searches homeowners run when something breaks, and for the planned work that follows.
The challenge
What we were hired to fix
When the AC dies in July or a water heater fails in January, homeowners search once and call whoever answers the question. The site had to put the right service page in front of them — while also winning the slower, planned searches for replacement, installation and maintenance.
Seven overlapping categories — each one needing to work in every market the company serves.
The strategy
An HVAC SEO strategy built around moments of need — not a service catalogue
We repositioned the site around the five moments that send a homeowner to Google, instead of listing services and hoping the right one gets found.
Urgent demand
Be the answer when something has just broken.
- “no cooling”
- “emergency plumber”
- “furnace stopped working”

The framework every page follows
The process
Ten steps, three stages
Understand the demand, build the pages that meet it, then make every visit easier to turn into a call or a booking.

- 09Conversion pathsClearer calls to action for booking, phone calls, estimates, emergency response and membership.
- 10Ongoing measurementVisibility tracked by service line, location and demand theme — not just total traffic.
Seasonal plan
A year-round demand calendar
Home-services demand follows the weather. Content and page optimisation were prepared ahead of each peak, so the right pages were ready before the searches arrived.
Maintenance and tune-up content live before the first hot week.
Repair and emergency pages ready for the “no cold air” rush.
Furnace and heating content ready ahead of the first cold snap.
Winter plumbing and water-heater problems, covered in advance.
The journey
Our HVAC & plumbing SEO journey: 4K to 16.4K, year by year
Not a straight line. A steady build, a breakout year, a setback in late 2025, and a recovery to a new high.
The engagement begins
Demand mapping, an SEO and content audit, and the service-to-location framework come first.
Steady gains
Organic traffic climbs month on month as the priority pages and local signals take hold.
Traffic roughly doubles
The biggest single-year jump — organic visits move from the mid-single-thousands into five figures.
A high, then a dip
A new mid-year high, followed by a drop to around 7–8K late in the year.
Recovered past the peak
Back above the 2025 high: +70% on Semrush’s period comparison, and still rising.
Values for 2022–2025 are read from the Semrush all-time traffic chart (Worldwide, desktop) and are approximate. The ten workstreams in the process above ran in parallel throughout — the years show how the results built, not when each step happened.
The result
HVAC SEO results: ~4× the organic traffic of 2022

Proof & limits
What this proves — and what it doesn’t yet
✓What it shows
- Estimated organic visibility up roughly 4× since 2022
- 8.3K ranking keywords across the service lines
- Still growing — +70% on Semrush’s period comparison
- Most US organic traffic is non-branded (17.3K vs 2.7K branded)
- Local-pack rankings for “heater repair”, “heating system repair” and “24 hour plumbing”
- First-party Search Console data: 9.52K clicks in three months, climbing steadily
- All of it earned: no paid traffic or paid keywords
–What it doesn’t show yet
- Calls, bookings or revenue — so the conversion-path work isn’t measured here
- Performance by service line or by city
- Why traffic dipped in late 2025 before recovering
- The effect of other marketing — the 2025 paid spike shows other activity ran
- Sessions and engagement from Google Analytics
That’s why we call this a visibility result, not a revenue claim.
FAQ
Your questions, answered
Straight answers on the numbers, the spike, and what they do and don’t mean.
01Is 16.4K real measured traffic?
No — it is a third-party estimate. Semrush models estimated monthly organic visits from ranking positions and keyword volumes. It is a reliable way to compare visibility over time, but it is not the same as sessions in Google Analytics or clicks in Search Console, which is why we label it an estimate throughout.
02What did SDM actually do for this client?
A ten-step programme running since 2022: demand mapping, an SEO and content audit, a service-to-location page framework, priority service-page optimisation, a seasonal content programme, local SEO, an internal-linking system, decision-stage content, clearer conversion paths, and ongoing measurement by service line, location and demand theme.
03What is the spike on the chart in 2025?
It sits on the paid-traffic line, not the organic one — a short-lived burst of paid activity. The organic figures on this page exclude it, and the snapshot shows zero paid traffic today.
04Why did traffic dip in late 2025?
The chart shows organic traffic falling from its mid-2025 high to around 7–8K late in the year, then recovering to a new high of 16.4K. A traffic snapshot alone does not establish the cause — seasonality, search algorithm updates and competitor movement can all do it. We show the dip rather than crop it, because the recovery is part of the result.
05How much of this traffic is branded?
Very little. Semrush’s US estimate puts branded traffic at 2.7K against 17.3K non-branded — about 86% of US organic visits come from people searching for a service, such as “heater repair”, rather than for the company by name.
06Which searches does the site rank for?
Mostly urgent HVAC and plumbing repair searches. The site appears in Google’s local pack for “heater repair” (60.5K monthly searches and about 40% of its US organic traffic), “heating system repair” and “24 hour plumbing”. That is the local SEO side of the work: service pages matched to each city, local trust signals and Google Business Profile support.
07Did the conversion work increase calls and bookings?
That is what it was designed to do, but we are not claiming a number here. Measuring it needs call tracking, booking and CRM data, which this snapshot does not include.
08How long does HVAC and plumbing SEO take to work?
Most HVAC and plumbing businesses see early movement within three to six months, with compounding gains after that as service pages, local signals and seasonal content build authority. This case study covers four years — the steady climb since 2022, with a setback and a recovery along the way, is typical of how local service SEO compounds.
09Can you do the same for my home-services business?
It depends on where you start — your current rankings, service areas, technical health and competition. We set a measurable baseline in a free audit before any work begins, so you can hold us to the movement from it.
