HVAC local SEO case study: 500 to 7.4K monthly organic visits in Southern California
An HVAC local SEO case study: fifteen times the organic traffic in two and a half years for a Murrieta HVAC and plumbing company — and a shift from people searching for the brand to people searching for the service, with local pack rankings to show for it.
Overview
From almost invisible to 7.4K visits a month
The company has looked after Southern California homes since 2006 — air conditioning, heating, plumbing and indoor air quality, from bases in Murrieta and Vista. In early 2024 its website drew around 500 organic visits a month.
The challenge
Four gaps between the business and the search results
The company had been fixing Southern California homes since 2006. Search hadn’t caught up — and when it started to, it was mostly people who already knew the name.
A reputation search couldn’t see
Nearly two decades of Southern California service, yet in early 2024 the website drew only around 500 organic visits a month.
Growth that leaned on the name
When traffic did surge in 2024–25, most of it came from people already searching for the company — not homeowners looking for a service.
A wide, fragmented service area
Murrieta and Vista serve Riverside, Orange and San Diego Counties. Every service has to be findable in every town — from Temecula and Menifee to Corona.
High-stakes, crowded searches
Inland summers turn a failed AC into an emergency. “AC repair” searches are urgent, seasonal and fiercely contested by every HVAC company in the region.
The strategy
A local SEO strategy: turn brand demand into service demand
People who already knew the company could find it. The strategy was to reach the far larger group who didn’t — homeowners searching for the problem, not the company.

The journey
From brand searches to service searches: our HVAC local SEO journey
The headline number grew fast. What changed underneath matters more: in 2026 the traffic shifted from people who already knew the name to people looking for the service.
Barely visible
Around 500 estimated organic visits a month.
A fast climb — mostly brand
Organic traffic jumps into the thousands, but almost all of it is people searching for the business by name.
The high point
Total organic peaks near 10K. Around 85% of it is still branded searches.
Service searches take over
Branded demand eases — but non-brand grows to roughly 5K, about two-thirds of all organic visits.
Totals and the branded share are read from the Semrush all-time traffic chart and its branded-traffic line (Worldwide, desktop) and are approximate. A one-month drop on the chart in late 2025 is not shown.

FAQ
Your questions, answered
Straight answers on the numbers, the brand shift, and what they do and don’t mean.
01Is 7.4K real measured traffic?
No — it is a third-party estimate. Semrush models estimated monthly organic visits from ranking positions and keyword volumes. It is a reliable way to compare visibility over time, but it is not the same as sessions in Google Analytics or clicks in Search Console, which is why we label it an estimate throughout.
02What did SDM do for this client?
A six-phase programme: an audit and baseline, intent mapping, service pages built around the problems homeowners search, local relevance for Murrieta, Vista and the surrounding towns, seasonal and answer-first content, and authority building — with brand and non-brand demand tracked separately throughout.
03Why was most of the early growth branded?
Semrush classifies most of the 2024–25 surge as branded — people searching for the company by name. Brand demand grows with reputation, reviews, word of mouth and advertising, not only SEO, so we do not present that surge as an SEO win on its own.
04What changed in 2026?
Branded traffic eased, but non-brand traffic — people searching for AC, heating or plumbing services rather than the company — grew to roughly 5K a month, about two-thirds of the total. That is the part of the result most directly tied to rankings for service searches.
05Why is traffic below the 2025 peak?
Because branded demand fell from its 2025 high. Total organic traffic is lower than the peak near 10K, but non-brand traffic is higher than at any earlier point on the chart — which is the healthier mix for winning new customers.
06What is local SEO for HVAC companies?
It is how an HVAC company gets found by homeowners in its own service area: service pages for each problem people search, relevance for every town covered, an optimised Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent business details. Done well, it shifts traffic from people who already know your name to people searching for the service — exactly the shift this case study shows.
07Which searches does the site rank for?
Local HVAC searches around Murrieta and the surrounding area. The company appears in Google’s local pack for “air conditioning repair murrieta” and for its own brand searches, and commercial-intent keywords bring 4.2K of its 7.4K estimated US visits — the core of local SEO for HVAC companies.
08Can you do the same for my home-services business?
It depends on where you start — your current rankings, service areas, technical health and competition. We set a measurable baseline in a free audit before any work begins, so you can hold us to the movement from it.
