SEO benchmarking is the process of recording a website’s current search performance and comparing it against competitors, industry norms and its own past results. The benchmark gives you a baseline, shows where the gaps are and makes it possible to prove whether later SEO work made a difference. It is sometimes misspelled “SEO benchmarketing”.

Why benchmark SEO?
- Proof. Without a starting point you cannot show what changed.
- Priorities. Comparing yourself with the sites that outrank you shows which gap matters most: content, links or technical health.
- Realistic targets. Goals based on your market are more useful than generic ones.
- Early warning. Regular benchmarks reveal a decline before it reaches revenue.
SEO metrics to benchmark
| Area | Metrics | Where to find them |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Impressions, average position, number of ranking keywords, share of voice | Google Search Console, rank tracker |
| Traffic | Organic clicks and sessions, split by brand and non-brand | Search Console, GA4 |
| Engagement | Click-through rate, engagement rate | Search Console, GA4 |
| Outcomes | Organic leads, sales, revenue, conversion rate | GA4, CRM |
| Authority | Referring domains, quality of links | Backlink tool |
| Technical | Indexed pages, crawl errors, Core Web Vitals | Search Console, site crawler |
| AI search | Mentions and citations in AI Overviews and AI assistants | AI visibility tools, manual checks |
How to run an SEO benchmark
- Choose the period. Use at least the last three months, and compare with the same months a year earlier to remove seasonality.
- Pick three to five search competitors. Use the sites that rank for your target keywords, which are not always your commercial competitors.
- Fix a keyword set. Group keywords by topic and intent and keep the list stable so results are comparable.
- Record your own numbers for each metric above.
- Record competitor numbers for the metrics you can see from outside: rankings, estimated traffic, referring domains, content depth and page speed.
- Find the gaps. Note keywords competitors rank for and you do not, pages that outperform yours and links they have earned.
- Set targets and a review date. Repeat the benchmark monthly or quarterly using the same method.
Internal vs competitive benchmarking
Internal benchmarking compares your site with its own history: this quarter against last quarter or last year. Competitive benchmarking compares you with other sites at the same moment. Use both. A 20% rise in traffic looks good until you see that the market leader doubled.
Common mistakes
- Benchmarking against industry averages that do not reflect your market or business model.
- Counting brand searches as SEO growth.
- Changing the keyword list or tool between measurements.
- Tracking rankings only and ignoring leads and revenue.
- Treating third-party traffic estimates for competitors as exact figures.
Frequently asked questions
What is SEO benchmarking?
It is measuring your current search performance and comparing it with competitors and your own past results, so you have a baseline to measure progress against.
Which SEO metrics should I benchmark?
Track organic visibility, non-brand traffic, conversions from organic search, referring domains, technical health and, increasingly, visibility in AI answers.
How often should I benchmark SEO?
Record core metrics monthly and run a full competitor benchmark every quarter, using the same method each time.
What is a good SEO benchmark?
There is no universal figure. A useful benchmark is your own baseline and the performance of the sites that currently outrank you.
